At Great Lakes Preparatory, we are dedicated to fostering a vibrant educational journey for K through 5th graders. Our unique curriculum is designed to ignite intellectual curiosity, encourage creativity, and build a strong community spirit among young learners.
Reading and writing form the backbone for all curricular experiences. Through our literacy program, we focus on the basics of grammar, spelling and phonics, while emphasizing critical thinking skills, comprehension and creativity. Students receive focused reading instruction and support, tailored to their individual level through reading groups that are created and continually evaluated. We incorporate books that inspire children to want to read for fun and ensure that content is age appropriate.
Students learn about different types of writing and are challenged to create their own original writing pieces, practice all stages of the writing process, including planning, writing, editing, re-writing and presenting. Students learn to write to inform, persuade, entertain, respond, and to express their own original thoughts and produce a writing portfolio that has reports, stories, poetry and other forms of writing to demonstrate the students’ mastery of writing objectives.
The study of mathematics is approached in a manner that allows every student to feel successful and grow in their understanding of mathematical concepts. Students receive focused instruction and support, tailored to their individual level through performance-based math groups. Students learn how to use and apply basic arithmetic operations. In additional to computation, students are challenged to apply what they have learned in problem solving scenarios. Students also study geometry, statistics, fractions, decimals and patterns to round out their mathematical study. The goal is to help students develop of love for mathematics and to be able to use the skills in all areas of their academic study.
Studying the world around us allows students to better understand their own place in the world and to begin to make meaning of the natural world around us. Using the scientific method as the basis of instruction, students have the opportunity to develop and execute investigations to further their understanding of scientific knowledge. Students have experiences in biological, ecological, physical and chemical sciences. The students also participate in a science fair which gives them the opportunity to form a question and explore that question in the hopes of providing an answer.
Students have the opportunity to study the interactions of different people and cultures through the lens of government, economics, civics, history, sociology and cultural studies. The study of the United States and the state of Michigan are two areas that are emphasized throughout the upper elementary experience. We teach social science through the lens of humanity and a balanced perspective; our goal is to help students better understand the world around them as a means of understanding themselves.
Students are taught by a variety of talented specials teachers who bring their talents to our school. Music, both vocal and instrumental, is taught in a group setting, with options for individualized lessons. Dance and movement classes are taught to allow students to practice coordination and rhythm. Additionally, we have a partnership with Shanon’s Dance Academy and offer extra dance classes at their studio next door. Visual arts are taught within the classroom, using a variety of media and with an emphasis on the development of skills and art appreciation.
In addition to basic core curriculum, students have the opportunity to apply and integrate concepts through various STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Math) activities. From building robots to creating circuits, students can explore and create with a variety of materials including our large lightboard.
